I don’t even know what day of the PhD journey it is. They are already starting to mould into one. This whole 9-5pm in the office situation is novel after a hectic honours year, where I lived off 5 coffees, chip buddy sandwiches, and should have paid rent to the university instead of my house. I have no idea what I have achieved in the last few weeks. ‘Researching your entire area of interest’ is surprisingly difficult and overwhelming. I simultaneously feel like the big kid and the little kid. Like when you moved from primary school to highschool, you felt so grown up and impressive, until you saw the seniors. That’s how it feels now, seeing the final year PhD students who seem so together, and don’t even get me started on seeing the lecturers and professors. I am not really sure what I am supposed to be doing, I know that we need to write a research proposal but that isn’t due until August, and I haven’t even met with my supervisor yet. I know that this may be egotistic, but I like it when people ask me what I do now- a PhD student sounds impressive and unique.
Until next time,
B.
