Your bathroom is supposed to be the place where you can relax and unwind. It’s supposed to be your private haven away from the rest of the people living with you. But if you have a messy bathroom, with unhung towels, kids’ toys in your bathtub, and unorganized clutter, then you aren’t going to get the peace of mind that should be afforded you.
Just what are you supposed to do about the problem? Well, here are the steps you need to take to achieve a clutter-free bathroom.
Step 1: Get rid of things
As you would do when de-cluttering other parts of your home, use your floor as a place to sort through the various items that litter up your bathroom. We are thinking about your soaps, shampoos, beauty items, and medications, for example.
Check for expiry dates – if they have long since past, add the relevant items to your discard pile. Do the same for any items that you don’t intend to use, or that you have too many duplicates of. Pare down your children’s bathroom toys too. If there is anything they rarely play with, add them to the pile of items that are destined for the bin or the recycling.
Once you have removed some of your bathroom items, the battle against clutter is almost done.
Step 2: Maximise your storage space
Are there any shelves in your bathroom cabinet left unused? Could you rearrange the shelves to accommodate more items? Do you have space beneath your drawers? Could certain items, such as your towels, be added to storage spaces elsewhere in your home?
Take a long hard look at the storage spaces you have available, and make sure you are using them to their fullest potential. In theory, if you have less stuff after your clear-out, you should have more space for your bathroom items anyway, but if not, consider the next step.
Step 3: Add more storage space to your bathroom
Especially if you have a smaller bathroom, you could add shelves to the walls and hooks to your doors to create more storage space for some of your bathroom items.
If you do have the floor space available, you could add a laundry basket, a new set of drawers, and for aesthetic as well as practical appeal, you could shop for bathroom vanities online. You would then have the extra storage to accommodate the various items that would usually clutter up your bathroom.
Another good idea is to hang bags or baskets behind your cupboard doors, as you would then have storage for your children’s toys or laundry. You could also hang baskets or bathroom caddies from your shower rods, as these could contain sponges, shampoos, and any of your other bathroom essentials.
Step 4: Keep the bathroom clean
After de-cluttering your bathroom, get into the habit of maintaining a clean space. Make a note of expiration dates, and remove anything that exceeds them. Label the various storage spots in your bathroom so your family knows where everything goes. And create a list of bathroom rules for your family too, such as ‘put items back where you found them,’ and ‘hang up your towels before leaving the bathroom.’
After taking these steps, you should then have a clutter-free bathroom! Let us know what you think, and if you have any other suggestions for our readers, be sure to let us know!
