Questions to ask yourself as 2018 comes to an end.

2018 is wrapping up and 2019 is about to begin. To me the years feel like they are going by faster and slower simultaneously. This time of year is always filled with goals, resolutions, reflections, and memories. It often seems overrated to put so much emphasis on the changing of the years, because really the difference between December 31st and January 1st is only one day. But for whatever reason us humans do care about years- we remember the year when movies were released, we know what year people are born in, we recall where Olympics were held in each year, and we reflect on the years that tragedy occurs.

Even though the difference between December 31st and January 1st is only one day, it marks the beginning of an entire new year and there is no better time to reflect on the year we just experienced and set goals for the year ahead.

For me I have some random resolutions like gardening more and cooking different recipes. But I also have some concrete goals- finish my PhD, get a full-time job, go to barre/pilates/yoga classes at least 4 times a week, and get my mortgage down to my 2019 target. Setting goals helps me stay self-motivated which is essential for PhD students as our work is all self-directed.

I have spent the last few days of 2018 reflecting and asking myself some questions that I wanted to share so you too can do a little self-reflection.

Where can you see yourself at the end of next year? Envision it and determine what goals need to be achieved to get there.

What are some of the most memorable experiences you had during 2018? When you think about them how do you feel?

What challenges did you overcome during 2018 and most importantly what did you learn from them?

What was the most awe-inspiring place you visited during 2018?

Who did you meet during 2018 that changed your life (even in a tiny way)?

What is the first thing you are going to do for yourself during 2019? And I mean really for yourself.
