5 things all PhD students (including myself) need to remember

1.  You cannot work 24/7: I think because a PhD generally has no set hours, it can be really easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you need to be working all the time. Obviously, you don’t need to/ can’t do that. So, try to structure your weeks to have ‘work’ hours and ‘non-work’ hours. And don’t feel guilty for taking a break.

2. Even if you work your butt of, there will still be a pile of work: Following on from point 1, if you work on your PhD for an entire weekend, I can promise you that there will still be a never-ending to-do list waiting for you on Monday. So again, don’t feel guilty for taking a break.

3. Passion is essential: A PhD is draining. I am over half way through my PhD (time wise- not work wise), and I am beginning to realise exactly how much of a drag it is. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love what I do. I think the main thing helping me preserve is my passion for my subject. If your passion is lacking try to re-spark it!

4. Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep: Yep, I’m going to say it again (one of my PhD pals- and avid-drofwhat reader will roll her eyes at this because we always tell her she needs to sleep more). Sleep is non-negotiable. I know that things have got to give, but sleep cannot consistently be one of them!

5. Things will get done: It may feel like you are currently in a trench that is filling up with snow, and that even though you are digging out as fast as you can, more and more snow is being piled on top of you (or is it just me?). Believe that with hard work, determination & passion, that it will get done.
